TIDELINE

A dark demarcation indicating the edge of a stain. When liquid is applied to one area of a support it spreads outward through the support from its point of entry. The concentration of colorants picked up and carried by the liquid during this spread tends to be greatest at the front of the expanding wet area. When the amount of liquid reaches its maximal spread a darker boundary at the edge of the stain is created by the deposition of more colorants there.
