The Manuscript Codex * Materials
SIZE

A substance used to fill the space between the fibers that constitute a sheet of paper so as to make the surface smoother and less porous for the application of media. In Islamic papers, size is usually applied to the paper surface after the sheets are made; more rarely, size can be added to the pulp from which the sheets are formed.Very little actual analysis has been made on sized papers in Islamic manuscripts.
# Very little actual analysis has been made on sized papers in Islamic manuscripts. Some primary sources seem to indicate that a number of other substances were used, so it is premature to assume that starch was necessarily the main sizing material used in all places and periods of Islamic bookmaking.
