The Manuscript Codex * Parts and positions
TEXTBLOCK SPINE

The edge of the manuscript where the spine-folds in the gatherings are stacked adjacent to each other. In the case of manuscripts composed of single loose leaves, this edge is the axis of rotation when the leaves are turned. When the textblock is sewn, the sewing thread passes between the different gatherings at the spine.
